Hang Glider Rescued near Lewis Chapel Ramp

Hang gliding accident. Pilot rescued.

At 1:36 PM CST Friday, 3/29/2024, the Dunlap Fire Department was dispatched to a hang-gliding accident on Lewis Chapel at the ramp. The glider crashed into the top of a tree and was stuck in the tree approximately 100 feet high, just under the bluff line. The pilot was not injured but was unable to descend to the ground.

Dunlap Fire assembled a rescue team and requested mutual aid from the Piney Volunteer Fire Department.

Rescue crews had to hike an estimated 1/2 mile and descend 400 to 500 feet to reach the tree’s base. Mutual aid was also received from Walden’s Ridge Emergency Services, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Drone team, Hamilton County EMA drone, and Sequatchie County Emergency Management. Rescuers were on the scene for over 6 hours. There were no injuries to the pilot or rescue crews.
