Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a bill that would require a court to order domestic violence offenders to wear a GPS device in the state.
HB2692/SB1972 would require the offender to wear the GPS device unless they no longer pose a threat to the alleged victim or public safety. The bill was signed by the governor on Tuesday.
The legislation would also provide the domestic assault victim with a device that would let them know if the offender was within a prescribed proximity of the “victim’s cellular device or electronic receptor device.”
Addtionally, the law requires a county or municipality using the GPS devices to enter into a written agreement with a qualified contract service provider. It also removes civil and criminal liability under certain circumstances.
The sponsors of the bill are Senator Paul Rose (R-District 32) and Representative Clay Doggett (R-District 70).
