High School Football Recap for Games Played on October 10

The South Pittsburg Pirates scored four defensive touchdowns, three of which occurred in the first eight minutes. This resulted in a 49-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and contributed to their Region 3-1A victory.

Brandon Goldsmith returned an interception for 38 yards, Jordan McClendon returned another interception for 28 yards, Taedyn Bibbs took a fumble back for 11 yards, and Braden Meeks also scored on a fumble recovery.

Twelve players scored for the Pirates, currently ranked second (6-1, 1-0), finishing with a 76-6 win under the mercy rule. Zech Green rushed for 110 yards on three carries, including a 53-yard touchdown run, while JaMychal Buckner had six carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

The Sale Creek Panthers defeated Whitwell on the road in dramatic fashion by beating the Tigers 18-12 in overtime.

Brody Harvey scored twice for Whitwell (2-6, 2-1) in the loss.

The Tigers are off this week before traveling to Jo Byrns on October 24.

 

Marion County (7-1, 3-0), the defending Class 2A state champion and ranked fourth in the state this season, never trailed Grundy County, which was 7-0 for the first time since 1954. The Warriors won 41-20.

Five ball carriers combined to rush for 210 yards for Marion, led by Ashton Richards with 61 yards, Mays with 48 yards and two touchdowns, Humphrey with 46 yards and two touchdowns, and Jayden Fraizer with 41 yards.

Vince Bryant led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 27 carries for 96 yards, two scores, and a 2-point conversion run.

Marion County has the week off. They will host Cascade on October 24. Grundy County hosts Bledsoe County (5-2, 1-1) next week. Second place in the region and a home playoff game are on the line.
