New Law Allows Facility Dogs to Accompany Victims and Witnesses in Courtrooms

A recent Tennessee law makes it possible for facility dogs to accompany victims and witnesses in courtrooms throughout the state as they give testimony. Before this legislation, only select judicial districts allowed facility dogs during courtroom proceedings and forensic interviews. Now, any jurisdiction may permit these trained animals if approved by the presiding judge.

The Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference explains that facility dogs are specially certified to comfort vulnerable witnesses, including children. Their presence can foster a feeling of security when individuals must share sensitive information or deal with stressful events like jury trials.

Families interested in having a facility dog assist them should reach out to their local district attorney’s office for details.
