Scottsboro Man Convicted of Murder in 2024 Fatal Shooting

A Scottsboro man has been found guilty of murder in connection with a 2024 fatal shooting case following a week-long trial in Jackson County Circuit Court.

According to a press release from the Scottsboro Police Department, officers responded to a shooting incident on March 31, 2024, within the Scottsboro city limits that resulted in the death of 31-year-old Deuntae Jarrod Johnson of Scottsboro.

Investigators with the Scottsboro Police Department secured the scene and launched what officials described as an extensive investigation, gathering evidence and conducting interviews related to the case.

Following the investigation, the case was presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against 44-year-old Lazarrell Dewayne Fennell of Scottsboro.

Court proceedings in the case of the State of Alabama versus Lazarrell Dewayne Fennell began May 19, 2026, after jury selection on May 18. The trial lasted five days, during which jurors heard testimony and reviewed evidence presented by witnesses and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

After receiving the case on May 26, the jury deliberated for approximately one hour before returning a unanimous guilty verdict, convicting Fennell of murder in connection with Johnson’s death.

Additional court proceedings, including sentencing, will now move forward through the Jackson County Circuit Court.

In the release, the Scottsboro Police Department thanked investigators, officers, court personnel, jurors, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for their work and professionalism throughout the judicial process.
