Dr. Mark Griffith, Marion County Director of Schools, reported receiving calls, emails, and texts about the proposed changes on Saturday. He explained that students could still purchase football tickets for $5 during the school day before each game. The proposal would affect Marion, South Pittsburg and Whitwell High Schools and is scheduled to be presented to the Marion County Board of Education for approval at its meeting on Tuesday.
Some school systems are scrambling after the TSSAA increased compensation for football officials, with referees now earning $130 per game and clock operators being paid $100 per game.
Hamilton County Schools raised their sports ticket prices in 2024 to $10 for adults and $5 for students.
