Class 2A’s third-ranked Marion County clobbered Brainerd, 63-6 to open the high school football season.

The defense for the Warriors was rock solid as they held Brainerd to minus-6 yards rushing.

The offense rushed for 233 yards and Colin Beason threw for 95 yards and three touchdowns. Zaiden Humphrey, who has made the position change from quarterback to running back, ran for 55 yards on five carries, scoring twice, and caught three passes for 55 yards and another score.

South Pittsburg dominated on Friday night as they scored 34 points in the first quarter alone and had 10 different players score touchdowns. Senior quarterback Knox Israel was 4-for-4 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Class 1A’s top-ranked Pirates, blew out Christian Community, 76-0.

In a back-and-forth battle between state-ranked rivals, Sequatchie and Bledsoe counties the Indians pulled out the overtime win, 43-42.

After converting fourth-and-goal into a 5-yard touchdown run. Sequatchie quarterback Hunter Minton again opted to keep it on the conversion attempt, battling his way across the goal line to give the Indians a dramatic 43-42 road win in the season opener for both programs.

Sequatchie’s win marked the first time since 2018 that the road team won.

Kason Hicks, finished with 120 yards and a run and a TD run.

Minton, who finished with 19 carries for 101 yards had three touchdowns and also completed 17 of 27 passes for 235 yards and another score.

Huntland hosted Whitwell on Friday and the Hornets pulled out the 27-19 win. The game was tied at 19 at halftime, but the Tigers were unable to score in the second half.
