Health officials across Tennessee are warning residents to take extra precautions against ticks this summer as warm temperatures and persistent wet weather create ideal conditions for increased tick activity across the region.
The warning comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports emergency room visits related to tick bites are running higher than normal in many parts of the country this year.
Experts say the recent stretch of humid, rainy weather across Southeast Tennessee — including the Chattanooga and Marion County areas — has helped fuel tick populations in grassy, wooded, and brush-covered areas. Additional rounds of showers and storms are expected through the week, keeping conditions favorable for ticks.
Health officials are encouraging people spending time outdoors to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants when possible, and check themselves, children, and pets carefully after being outside.
Ticks are known to carry several illnesses and conditions, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and Alpha-Gal Syndrome — a potentially serious allergic reaction to red meat caused by bites from the lone star tick.
According to the Tennessee Department of Health, tick-related illnesses in the state typically begin increasing in April before peaking during the summer months. Officials say anyone who spends time outdoors in Tennessee can be at risk, especially hikers, campers, hunters, landscapers, farmers, and people working or living near wooded areas.
Health experts say removing ticks quickly is one of the most important steps in preventing disease transmission. The CDC notes that removing an attached tick within 24 hours can significantly reduce the risk of contracting some illnesses.
Officials recommend using EPA-registered insect repellents, treating clothing with permethrin when appropriate, avoiding tall grass, and performing thorough tick checks after outdoor activities. Pet owners are also encouraged to ensure animals are protected with veterinarian-approved tick prevention products.
