Ketner’s Mill Closes Public Access Following Liability Concerns

A popular local destination known for its historic charm and annual fall festival is closing its property to public access, citing growing legal and liability concerns.

In a statement posted this week on Facebook, the owners of Ketner’s Mill announced that while the annual Ketner’s Mill Country Arts Fair will continue each year, the mill property itself will no longer be open to the public effective immediately.

The owners said they have enjoyed sharing the historic property with visitors free of charge over the years, but recently began receiving correspondence from attorneys representing individuals pursuing personal injury claims related to incidents that allegedly occurred during recreational visits to the property.

According to the statement, concerns over increasing legal risks, stress, and potential liability ultimately led to the decision.

“While we have always been happy to share this special place with others, the increasing legal risks, stress, and potential liability associated with public access have made it necessary for us to make this difficult decision,” the statement read.

The owners expressed appreciation to those who have visited and respected the property over the years but said protecting their family, property, and future made the closure necessary.

As a result, the mill and surrounding areas will now be closed to public access.

The announcement is expected to disappoint many local residents and visitors who have long enjoyed the scenic historic site, which has become a well-known destination in the area. However, organizers emphasized that the annual fall festival will continue despite the closure of the property to everyday visitors.

No additional details were provided regarding the personal injury claims referenced in the statement.

Ketner’s Mill is located near Whitwell along the Sequatchie River and has been a longtime attraction for both local residents and tourists, particularly during its annual fall festival each October.
