TDOT Advises Motorists of Ongoing Road Work and Bridge Inspections Across Marion County

Motorists traveling throughout Marion County should expect delays and use extra caution as several Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) projects remain active across the county this week.

One of the most significant projects continues along Interstate 24 near Monteagle, where crews are performing rockfall mitigation work on the westbound side of the interstate near mile marker 138. Traffic has been shifted into the left lane and shoulder while the middle lane, right lane, and right shoulder remain closed. TDOT says all travel lanes are expected to reopen by June 9, although work will continue off the roadway through the end of July.

On State Route 108 near Coppinger Cove, contractors are conducting slide mitigation work that includes grading, drainage improvements, and paving. The roadway has been reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals near mile marker 2.8. Drivers should expect delays and proceed carefully through the work zone. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2027.

Drivers crossing the Tennessee River on State Route 156, commonly known locally as the “Big Blue Bridge,” should also be prepared for delays this week. TDOT contractors are conducting a scheduled inspection of the Shelby A. Rinehart Bridge through Friday.

Eastbound lane and shoulder closures are planned Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., while westbound lane and shoulder closures are scheduled Thursday and Friday during the same hours. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by flaggers, and motorists are encouraged to slow down, remain alert for workers and equipment, and be prepared to stop.

Additional construction activity is taking place on U.S. Highway 41 (State Route 2) near mile marker 17.25 in Marion County. Crews are performing grading and drainage work that has resulted in a lane shift for eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic is not expected to be affected, but drivers should reduce speed and use caution in the area.

Meanwhile, resurfacing operations continue on State Route 283 from near State Route 27 to the Sequatchie County line. The project involves Cold In-Place Recycling and will require periodic single-lane closures controlled by flaggers. Motorists should anticipate brief delays and watch for workers and equipment along the route.

For Marion County residents who commute into Chattanooga, utility work continues on Cummings Highway in Hamilton County. Flagger-assisted lane closures are in place on State Route 2 between Francis Street and the Interstate 24 overpass. The work is scheduled to continue through June 18 and is taking place weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Drivers should be prepared for intermittent stops and reduced speeds through the work zone.

TDOT reminds all motorists to obey posted speed limits, watch for changing traffic patterns, and remain alert when traveling through active construction and maintenance areas.
