Jackson County Man Accused of Biting Deputy, Knocking Gun From Officer’s Hand During Arrest

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. — A Jackson County man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he bit a deputy and knocked another deputy’s firearm from his hand while resisting arrest during a warrant service operation late last month.

According to court documents, deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on May 29 when Brendan Cole Westmoreland allegedly became combative as officers tried to take him into custody. During the struggle, investigators say Westmoreland slapped a deputy’s firearm out of the deputy’s hand.

Authorities also allege that Westmoreland bit Deputy John Moravits on the arm during the altercation. Court records indicate the bite did not break the skin but did involve blood exposure.

As a result of the incident, Westmoreland has been charged with second-degree assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest.

The case remains pending in Jackson County court. Additional details about the original warrant being served were not immediately available.

If convicted, the charges involving assault on a law enforcement officer and disarming an officer could carry significant penalties under Alabama law. The incident remains under review by local authorities.
