SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. — A serious motor vehicle crash on Cagle Mountain Friday afternoon, June 19, led to the temporary closure of Highway 111, multiple medical helicopter responses, and power outages for residents in the area.
Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 2:30 p.m. to the crash scene near the Cagle Mountain Trading Post on Highway 111. Initial reports indicated a collision involving multiple vehicles.
By 3 p.m., authorities had shut down Highway 111 in both directions at the top and bottom of Cagle Mountain as emergency crews worked the scene. A LifeForce medical helicopter was dispatched to assist, and a second helicopter later arrived as the response expanded.
Traffic was diverted onto Fredonia Mountain Road while emergency personnel, law enforcement, and fire crews remained on scene. Officials cautioned motorists that Fredonia Mountain Road was not designed to handle the increased traffic volume and urged patience during the closure.
The crash also damaged utility infrastructure. According to the Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative, a power pole was broken during the incident, causing outages for residents on Cagle Mountain. Utility crews were unable to begin repairs until the scene was cleared and deemed safe.
Around 5 p.m., authorities temporarily opened one southbound lane to allow backed-up traffic, including commercial vehicles, to descend the mountain. By approximately 6:45 p.m., traffic was alternating through a single lane near the crash site.
Highway 111 fully reopened in both directions around 7:30 p.m., ending nearly five hours of traffic disruptions.
The extent of injuries and the number of people involved in the crash were not immediately released. No information regarding fatalities had been made public as of Friday evening.
