Lane Closures Planned This Week on I-24’s Tennessee River Bridge in Marion County

HALETOWN, Tenn. — Drivers traveling through Marion County this week should expect daytime lane closures on Interstate 24 as crews conduct a routine inspection of the Holman J. Walker Bridge over the Tennessee River.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, contract crews will begin a five-day inspection of the bridge on Monday, June 22. The structure carries I-24 across the Tennessee River near Haletown and the Tennessee Welcome Center in Marion County and is one of the region’s most heavily traveled interstate crossings.

The inspection will require workers to perform hands-on evaluations of key steel components throughout the bridge. Because of the nature of the work, lane closures will be in place during daytime hours.

TDOT says the following traffic impacts are expected:

  • June 22-25: The right lane and shoulder of Interstate 24 Eastbound will be closed daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the full length of the bridge.
  • June 26: The right lane and shoulder of Interstate 24 Westbound will be closed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the full length of the bridge.

Specialized inspection equipment will be used to access portions of the bridge that cannot be reached during standard visual inspections.

TDOT officials say the work is part of the department’s ongoing bridge maintenance program designed to ensure the safety and long-term reliability of Tennessee’s transportation infrastructure.

Motorists traveling through the area are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and check traffic conditions before heading out during the scheduled lane closures.
