Firefighters with the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department spent several hours clearing storm-related hazards across Signal Mountain late Monday night and into the early morning hours Tuesday.
The first call came in just before 11 p.m. when a tree was reported blocking U.S. Highway 127 near the scenic overlook between Signal Mountain and Dunlap. While responding, firefighters encountered additional storm debris and another fallen tree in the roadway, forcing crews to stop and clear those hazards before reaching the original scene.
Upon arrival, crews found a large tree completely blocking both lanes of Highway 127. Firefighters used chainsaws and other equipment to cut up the tree and remove it from the roadway, restoring access for motorists traveling between Signal Mountain and Dunlap.
As crews returned to service, they discovered yet another downed tree obstructing northbound traffic near Dandy Road in the Lone Oak community. Firefighters once again worked to clear the roadway and reopen the route to traffic.
The department reminds drivers to use caution during and after severe weather events, noting that fallen trees, debris, heavy rain, and fog can create dangerous travel conditions with little warning.
