SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. — Emergency crews responded to two separate traffic incidents Monday morning on area mountain roadways, causing significant traffic disruptions on both Cagle Mountain and Fredonia Mountain.
The first crash occurred on Highway 111 between Dunlap and Cagle, prompting authorities to close the roadway in both directions. According to the Dunlap Fire Department, the crash occurred near the waterfalls area and involved multiple vehicles.
One fatality has been reported as a result of the crash.
Traffic backed up in both directions as first responders worked the scene. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency personnel remained on scene.
A short time later, emergency crews were dispatched to a separate crash on Fredonia Mountain Road. Witnesses reported a vehicle had overturned, resulting in temporary traffic delays as first responders responded to the scene.
The rollover crash partially blocked the roadway and caused backups while crews worked to manage traffic and remove the vehicle. The roadway was cleared and normal traffic flow resumed in less than an hour.
Authorities have released few details about the circumstances surrounding either incident. However, officials described the Highway 111 crash as a significant event that required a full closure of the roadway for several hours.
According to the Dunlap Fire Department, Highway 111 was largely cleared and reopened to traffic shortly before 1 p.m.
