Former Marion County Judge Clifford Layne Dies at 94

MARION COUNTY, Tenn. — Former Marion County General Sessions Judge Clifford Layne, who served the county for more than three decades, has died.

Judge Layne passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026. He was 94.

Layne was a Jasper native and graduated from Marion County High School in 1949. He later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

After returning home, Layne operated Layne’s Paint and Body Shop while completing a degree in criminal justice at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Layne was elected Marion County General Sessions Court judge and served in that role for 32 years. He also served as Jasper Municipal Court judge for 15 years.

He was a member of the Alhambra Temple, the American Legion, and was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, June 11, at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. before the service.
