Marion County citizen Thomas Morgan has filed a lawsuit against county officials, claiming they violated his civil rights by removing him from county commission meetings.
The lawsuit says that at the January 22 meeting, Chairwoman Linda Mason opened the floor to the attendees for public comment but noted that the comments must address matters on the agenda.
Morgan addressed the commission about allocating public funds for infrastructure projects like roadways and railroad crossings.
Morgan went to the “microphone,” but the lawsuit says Mason continued to interrupt him and threatened to have him removed.
The lawsuit says Marion County Sheriff Bo Burnette and Deputy Dale Winters used “physical force and police coercion” to remove Morgan from the meeting.
The lawsuit says a similar chain of events unfolded on June 24 in which Morgan was pointed at, ‘talked down to,’ and removed from the meeting while attempting to speak.
The lawsuit is asking for a total of $300,000 in damages.
