Latest on Sequatchie County Fire

Firemen have battled a nearly 500-acre wildfire that broke out in Sequatchie County early Sunday afternoon. The fire was nearing 100% contained on Monday late afternoon. Rough terrain and weather conditions posed challenges for crews working to contain the fire.

Fire Chief Norman Hatfield with the Dunlap Fire Department says the fire was likely started by someone burning leaves at the base of the mountain on Woodcock Road.

Multiple homes have suffered heat damage, and the fire also impacted more than a dozen outbuildings.

Three tanker planes flew in from Florida, dropping red dye to help smother the flames. Rainfall late Sunday into early Monday aided first responders from over a dozen departments in their firefighting efforts.

Residents say this is the largest wildfire they’ve seen in the area for a few years. According to reports, the fire on Woodcock Road burned 450 acres and is now contained.
