Scottsboro Receives Grant to Help with Flooding

The city of Scottsboro has been awarded a $600,000 grant to address downtown flooding issues. City officials announced that the Community Development Block Grant Urgent Need funds will be allocated to reroute a damaged and partially collapsed drainage line that has resulted in flooding and water damage to First Baptist Church and other nearby structures.

The existing drainage line, which is 85 years old and was installed during the Works Progress Administration era, currently runs beneath church playgrounds and activity centers without a public right-of-way. The new drainage line will circumvent private property by being installed along Laurel Street and Scott Street. Officials have indicated that the old line will be sealed to prevent further problems.

In addition to the grant, the city of Scottsboro will contribute $187,430 in local funds to support the project.
