The Judge David Campbell Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, presented the Woman in American History award to Linda Hooper on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The emphasis of Women in American History is on the role of women, past and present, in American History. The women honored for this recognition have made a significant contribution or have made a difference in their communities. These women are, or have been, intellectual, educational, social, religious, political, scientific, or cultural innovators.
Linda Hooper certainly fits that description.
The nomination of Mrs. Hooper read:
In 1998, Linda Hooper was teaching her students about the Holocaust. Living in Whitwell, Tennessee, a tiny, almost exclusively Caucasian town of 1700 people, the students couldn’t wrap their heads around the concept of six million people being so hated. Through Mrs. Hooper’s studies, she learned Norwegians had worn paperclips on their lapels in protest and resistance to the Nazis. She encouraged the students to try to collect six million paperclips to help them understand the magnitude of deaths during that time. The result of this project and her leadership is the Children’s Holocaust Memorial housed at Whitwell Middle School.
The Judge David Campbell Chapter was proud to recognize Mrs. Hooper with the Daughters of the American Revolution Woman in American History award and was treated to a brief tour by Mrs. Taylor Kilgore who highlighted the memorial’s latest acquisitions. In addition to the award for Mrs. Hooper, the chapter made a $500 donation to the Children’s Holocaust Memorial in her honor. They hope the funds will help ensure that this memorial continues to serve as a beacon of light and learning for many years to come.
