Parents in Tennessee are upset after state-funded scholarships for their children were revoked due to an administrative mistake. The Education Freedom Act, signed by Governor Bill Lee, offers nearly $7,300 for private school tuition and drew 33,000 applicants within hours of launching.
A TDOEÂ spokesman said via email,
Due to an inadvertent error, 166 Education Freedom Scholarship applicants received incorrect email notifications. TDOE sincerely regrets this mistake and immediately notified impacted families to correct the miscommunication.
The department is still processing Education Freedom Scholarship applications on the waitlist and is grateful for the opportunity to deliver school choice for 20,000 Tennessee families in the first year of the program.
More than 200 private schools in Tennessee have agreed to participate in the program, which awarded scholarships to approximately 20,000 students this year. The situation leaves many families scrambling to adjust their educational plans just weeks before the school year begins.
