Tennesseans will once again have the opportunity to fish license-free across the state during the annual Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 6. The event, organized by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, allows both residents and visitors of all ages to fish in Tennessee’s public waters without purchasing a fishing license for the day.
In addition to the one-day event, children ages 15 and younger may fish for free the entire week beginning June 6 and continuing through June 12.
The annual tradition dates back to 1991 and is designed to introduce families and young anglers to fishing and outdoor recreation across the state. TWRA officials say the event encourages Tennesseans to spend time outdoors while learning more about the state’s natural resources and waterways.
Numerous community fishing events and youth rodeos are planned statewide, including activities at Tennessee State Parks and local lakes.
The event is named in honor of former TWRA Executive Director Bobby Wilson, who retired in 2022 after more than four decades with the agency. Wilson spent much of his career working in the fisheries division before later serving in leadership roles with the organization.
Officials note that the free fishing opportunity applies to Tennessee public waters, TWRA-managed lakes, and state park facilities. Some privately operated pay lakes may still require admission or fishing fees.
