The Monteagle Police Department had asked for the public’s help on May 20 in locating 29-year-old Kurt McConnell, who was last seen on May 14 near the Pilot Travel Center in Monteagle. At the time, investigators said McConnell may have been walking toward Sewanee or could have accepted a ride from someone in the area.

According to reports from law enforcement, skeletal remains were recently discovered in a wooded area near Sewanee. Investigators now believe the remains are those of McConnell, although officials say forensic testing and DNA analysis are being conducted to make a positive identification.

McConnell was described as approximately 6-foot-4, weighing around 200 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. His disappearance prompted concern throughout the Monteagle and Sewanee communities as friends, family members, and law enforcement searched for answers regarding his whereabouts.

Authorities have not released details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have indicated additional information may be released once the identification process is complete and investigators determine the cause and manner of death.
