Johnny Grimes graduated from Marion County High School 61 years ago, and his name remained closely associated with the school throughout his life. He died Friday after battling cancer, prompting an outpouring of tributes from people whose lives he had touched.
After graduating from college, Grimes fulfilled his youthful dream of coaching at his alma mater. He went on to spend a long career serving his home county as a teacher, coach, principal, and administrator.
He helped many athletes pursue successful careers after high school. Even after retiring more than 20 years ago, he remained a dedicated supporter of Marion County athletics and rarely missed a game, regardless of the sport.
Grimes was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame and the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. He was 79. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, November 1, at the Jasper chapel of Rogers Funeral Home.
