Update on Fire/Murder in Bridgeport, Al

On April 22, 2026 at approximately 2 p.m. the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to a mobile home fire on 6th Street in Bridgeport. The fire department was extinguishing the fire and located a deceased female, Lisa Russell, age 54 of Bridgeport, inside the residence. The Sheriff’s Office was notified and Deputies, Investigators, Bridgeport Police, Stevenson Police and the State Fire Marshals Office responded to the scene. It was determined that foul play was involved in the death of Russell and that the residence was intentionally set on fire.
A manhunt ensued for the male occupant of the residence who was unaccounted for. Investigators later received information from neighbors that the male suspect had been seen on home security cameras in the neighborhood. Another citizen gave information on a recent siting of the male suspect several blocks away. The citizen’s information and assistance led to the apprehension of John Dunagan, age 62 of Bridgeport. JCSO commends the citizens on their assistance to law enforcement during the search for the suspect.
The victim was sent to the Alabama Department Of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
John Dunagan was arrested and charged with Murder. Bond has not been set at this time.
