GRUNDY COUNTY, Tenn. — A project years in the making is nearing completion as Grundy County prepares to open what is being billed as the largest inclusive playground in Tennessee.
“Miracle on the Mountain Play Outside Park,” located near the junction of Highways 56 and 108 in Coalmont, will welcome families as it opens to the public on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 9:00 a.m., after months of construction and planning for a project that spent years in the dream stage.
Back in 2012, a group of Grundy County citizens created an organization called Miracle on the Mountain Play Outside Park to give their own children with disabilities a place to play and be a kid.
The group attempted to build a park, but funding caused it to fall short.
In October 2023, Tennessee awarded officials $1,945,000 in a grant to build the inclusive playground. Crews began official construction on the Coalmont park in February of last year with completion still underway ahead of the public opening.
County leaders say the park was designed to ensure children of all abilities can play together in an accessible environment.
The playground features dozens of accessible play elements built at ground level, allowing children with mobility challenges to fully participate alongside their peers. The park will also include a splash pad, adaptive playground equipment, and an accessible zip line designed for children with disabilities.
The vision for the project dates back more than a decade, when families of children with disabilities began advocating for a playground where every child could enjoy the same opportunities to play. Grundy County officials later revived the effort and secured funding through a combination of local, state, and federal sources.
County leaders have said the park’s mission extends beyond recreation, creating a place where children can interact, learn, and grow together regardless of physical or developmental abilities. Once open, the facility is expected to become a regional destination for families across Tennessee and the Southeast.
Grundy County Parks & Recreation started accepting applications for staff positions at the park in mid-May. If interested, jobseekers can contact the mayor’s office at 931-692-3718.
