Election-Time Letters Rules for Candidates

Firstly: thank you for running for public office. Our democracy only functions because of your willingness to step forward and represent your neighbors.

In an effort to make sure SValleyNow.com’s opinion section treats all political candidates as fairly as possible, we implement some extra rules about how candidates are allowed to promote themselves there in the months ahead of an election.

  • All the usual letter rules apply.
  • Barring exceptional circumstances, leading up to an election, longer op-ed columns are not accepted from candidates.
  • All candidates are allowed one letter to the editor where they can promote their political views and/or campaigns.
  • No candidate letters will be published in the seven day period ahead of Election Day unless there’s an unforeseen and pressing reason.
  • These rules do not apply to a candidate’s supporters; their letters are always welcome. Please encourage your supporters to voice their opinions here.
  • Candidates who would like to promote themselves in The Herald beyond the letters section may contact the advertising department.

If questions arise, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the editor by email or on the phone (423-815-NEWS).
