Obituaries

Jean Maynor Baxter, 88, of Jasper, Tennessee, was called home to her Lord on January 23, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. A woman of profound faith and unwavering devotion, Jean leaves behind a legacy of love and service to her family and her community.

Originally a native of Benton, Tennessee, Jean moved to Jasper when her husband, Bill (“Coach Bill”) Baxter, accepted the head football coaching position at Marion County High School. She was a dedicated employee of the Marion County Board of Education and Tennessee Consolidated Coal, eventually retiring from the Marion County Trustee’s office.

Jean’s spiritual life was anchored at the First Baptist Church of Jasper, where she was a faithful, long-standing member. Her kindness and commitment were felt by many through her active participation in Sunday school and her tireless work within various church ministries.

She is survived by her devoted husband of over 70 years, Bill Baxter; her three children, Tammy (David) Smith, Tim (Karen) Baxter, and Jan (Roger) Egli; Foster son Ronald White; her seven grandchildren, Jeanne (Michael) Swigart, Chelsey Smith, Brooke (Connor) Bartow, Nick (LaRae) Egli, Bradley (Keli) Baxter, Tori Egli, and Bailey (Sam) Stogner; and her seven great-grandchildren, John and Luke Bartow; Jones, Norah, Lois, and Rowe Egli; and, Pearl Jean Swigart. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Burch and Lena Bell Maynor, and her six siblings: Charles Maynor, Edna Rogers, Burch Maynor, Broughton Maynor, Peggy Chastain, and Frank Maynor.

Family was the cornerstone of Jean's life. She and Bill cherished every moment with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, finding their greatest joy in the love and laughter of their expanding family.

The family will receive friends for visitation at Tate Funeral Home in Jasper, TN, on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A service to honor Jean’s life will follow the Saturday visitation at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Senior Pastor Greg Steele of Jasper First Baptist Church officiating, with the interment to follow at the graveside.

Serving as pallbearers will be Nick Egli, Bradley Baxter, Connor Bartow, Michael Swigart, Sam Stogner, and Lee Tallent.

The family would like to express our most sincere appreciation to Ann Roberts of Hospice and Michelle Morrison and the staff at Serenity on the Farm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Bill Baxter Scholarship Fund at Builtwell Bank, 105 Betsy Pack Dr, Jasper, TN 37347 or to Hospice of Chattanooga - Jasper Office, 4930 Main Street, Jasper TN 37347, both in memory of Jean Baxter.
