Grundy County Sheriff Heath Gunter heard strong words from Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin during a Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission session Friday morning in Nashville.
The POST Commission learned earlier this year that some deputies in Grundy County were working without certification. They also accused the sheriff’s office of filing false reports, preventing arrests, and failing to update the paperwork.
Chairman Partin raised the issue that some Grundy County deputies are on the Giglio/Brady List.
The list is for law enforcement officers who have a previous history of making false statements. Once an officer is placed on the list, the district attorney can choose not to let them testify in court. Partin asked Gunter how many deputies have been placed on the Brady List by the District Attorney. Gunter said, “Seven, sir.”
Sheriff Gunther said if all seven deputies had to be off his force, Grundy County would be left with only two deputies to patrol it.
The commission told Sheriff Gunther he had another 30 days to show action.
Partin told Gunter he needed to clean up the issues or be out of office.
