Whitwell Police Arrest Armed Suspect after Vehicle Pursuit.
On December 12th, 2023, at approximately 10:25 p.m, Whitwell Police observed a silver VW Beetle with spray-painted black taillights. The vehicle also had a thick black cover concealing the license plate.
Whitwell Police initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle when it turned onto Ketchersid Lane from Morrison Springs Rd. The vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle cut through the yard at the end of Ketchersid Lane and began traveling back to HWY 28. The vehicle then ran the stop sign at HWY 28 and proceeded southbound at speeds upwards of 90mph. The vehicle then made several turns and drove onto oncoming traffic lanes, ultimately stopping at 733 Belmont Church Rd. The driver then exited his vehicle and began running on foot.
Police chased after the driver, David Pickett, who ended up losing his balance and falling after running approximately 100 yards. Pickett failed to comply with Police commands and reached for a firearm located on a shoulder holster. A taser was utilized to take Pickett into custody with the assistance of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
Upon searching Pickett, Police located a shoulder holster harness he was wearing, which had the gun located inside.
Upon dispatch running Pickett’s information, dispatch advised that he had two active warrants out of Marion County and had a revoked driver’s license.
While evading in the vehicle, Police say Pickett had a female passenger with him. After speaking with the passenger, she told Police Pickett would not let her out of the vehicle and told her he would take her to a safe place before running.
David Pickett was transported to the Marion County Jail without further incident and charged with Unlawful possession of a weapon, Felony evading, Reckless endangerment, Driving on a revoked license, and Resisting arrest.
