The South Pittsburg Pirates started their day with a 10 AM start against Union City in the TSSAA Class 1A state baseball tournament on Wednesday. They won that game 6-2.
The Pirates were set to play Oakdale in an elimination game at 5 PM, but because of thunderstorms in Eagleville the game did not start until 9 PM and ended at 10:30 PM. It was worth the wait as South Pittsburg won the late-night contest 7-1.
Luke Rector threw an outstanding game for South Pittsburg. He only allowed 3 hits, 1 unearned run and he had 9 strikeouts. He also had a hit, an RBI and scored once.
Jake McGullion was 2-for-4 and 2 RBI for the Pirates. Bailey Fults was also 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and he had an RBI for South Pittsburg.
The 22-14 Pirates will the red-hot Eagleville Eagles (32-5) at 2 PM on Thursday in Eagleville. The Eagles have scored 33 runs in their first two games in the tournament.
