July 16, 2024 marks the 9-year anniversary of the terrorist attack in Chattanooga that killed 4 marines and a Navy sailor.
In 2015, a man opened fire at a military recruiting center and then went to the Naval Operational Support Center, killing 5 service members in the attack.
Those 5 service members include Sergeant Carson Holmquist, Lance Corporal Skip Wells, Navy Petty Officer Second Class Randall Smith, Staff Sergeant David Wyatt, and Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan.
Two other people, Sergeant Demonte Cheely, a marine recruiter, and Dennis Pedigo, Jr., a police officer, were also wounded in the attack.
The suspect, Mohammad Adulazeez, was shot and killed by police.
Built in 2018 and placed less than 1,000 feet from the U.S. Navy Operational Support Center off Amnicola Highway, today the Wreath of Honor at the Tennessee Riverpark is just one way Chattanooga has memorialized the five men.
Each pillar of the wreath represents a different member and gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of these men and their service.
The Wreath of Honor is maintained by Hamilton County Parks & Recreation.
Additionally, a mural dedicated to The Fallen Five was painted almost a year following the attack and can be found at 1715 McCallie Avenue.
Another memorial can be found at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center off Lee Highway at Highway 153 listing the names and detailing the city’s commitment to never forget what happened that July day.
The Chattanooga Area Veteran’s Council will present a “Remembrance Program for The Fallen Five” on Tuesday, July, 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM EDT at the Tennessee Riverpark Wreath of Honor Memorial.
