State of Tennessee begins issuing newly-designed Driver’s License and ID cards

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security began issuing new driver licenses and ID cards on Monday.

The cards have a new look, which features the Tennessee flag and state capitol.

But you may be wondering, why the change?

Marlo Mason, a safety program manager for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security says the department needs to periodically change the licenses to upgrade for different features. These features help prevent fraud and we incorporate new technology.

The new the license make it more difficult to counterfeit, alter, or duplicate.

The question is, do you need to get one?

Mason says it’s not necessary at this time and your current one is valid until the expiration date; however, if you do go in for a renewal, replacement or a duplicate, you will receive the new design.

The new licenses are only being issued at select service centers, but officials with Tennessee’s department of safety say they plan to slowly offer the new license at more centers over time.
