Workers at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant voted to unionize in April of 2024, and the upcoming contract talks between VW and the United Auto Workers (UAW) are the next step in the process and slated to start this week.
UAW President Shawn Fain joined the VW Chattanooga workers over the weekend as the contract negotiations are set to begin. A sizeable crowd of workers attended the assembly held on Sunday evening to meet with Fain and other UAW leaders to set forth their demands of Volkswagen.
The Chattanooga plant began production of the Volkswagen Passat in 2011, later adding the Atlas SUV in 2017, and the German automaker is moving toward their electric model lineup with the ID.4 and perhaps others in the future.
Contract negotiations will begin on Thursday, September 19 beginning at 9:00 AM EDT.
Volkswagen released a statement on Sunday that they were “looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work.”
“We are looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work. We are committed to listening to our employees’ feedback throughout this process so we can reach a deal that improves their experience. We will work tirelessly and collaboratively to reach a fair agreement that takes into account the unique nature of our single U.S. plant, our employees and the Chattanooga community. This will ensure a strong and successful future for Volkswagen Chattanooga with the UAW.”
