The future of healthcare in Grundy County is growing following the groundbreaking ceremony held on Friday, November 15th, 2024 for the county’s new health department building.

Grundy, like many small rural counties in Tennessee lacks a hospital within the county, so access to healthcare for residents is vital to the community’s health.

This new building will be located in Coalmont near Grundy County High School and will replace the existing building in the county seat of Altamont that officials say has stood since the 1960s and has seen better days.

Officials also say the move to Coalmont will make the facility more accessible to the community since it is centrally-located in the county.

The new facility will have significant upgrades including more clinic space and a larger dental laboratory making it possible to provide better care to residents and primary care to the uninsured. It will also feature more space for partnerships including Volunteer Mental Health.

Grundy County Mayor Michael Brady says he hopes the new facility and its close proximity to the high school will also bring T-CAT and other educational opportunities about for area students.

Construction is expected to take approximately 9 to 12 months, with department officials hoping that it will be completed by November 2025.
