Press Release from the Whitwell Police Department

On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at approximately 10:18 AM, police were dispatched to the 200 block of S. Oak Street regarding a Domestic Assault in Progress. Police were advised that there was a female and a male fighting, that a shovel was thrown towards a blue car, and that the blue car left the scene.

Upon arrival, police observed an older model Chevrolet S10 driving northbound on S. Willow Street. With lights activated, police conducted a traffic stop on the S10. The driver of the S10 placed the vehicle in reverse and backed up back into the 288 S. Oak Street driveway. In the S10, a male party was later identified as Tyler Layne, and a female party. Police stepped out of the vehicle as Layne stepped out of his. Police gave lawful orders for Layne to come to the passenger side of the patrol unit. At this time, Layne fled on foot towards S. Main Street. Police advised Layne to stop immediately, but he failed to do so. Police took Layne into custody on E. Spring Street. Police observed Layne jerk away from officers. While searching Layne’s pockets, police located 1.7 Grams of methamphetamine, as well as a set of brass knuckles. Layne advised he ran because he was “scared for his life.”

After speaking to witnesses, it was found that Layne was approached by a female party, identified as Madonna Morrison. Morrison was upset because she allegedly had a relationship with Layne but found him in the S10 with a different female. The two started arguing when Layne shoved Morrison. At one point, Layne took a shovel, chucked it into Morrisons vehicle, and shattered the window. Witnesses advised that Morrison had her juvenile child in the car, which is under 8 years old, and that the window shattered where the juvenile was sitting. Police observed shattered glass all over the driveway, which correlates with the window being broken by a shovel thrown by Layne.

Layne was transported without further incident to the Marion County Jail. Layne is being charged with Evading Arrest, Resisting Stop, Halt, Frisk, Possession of Schedule II, Domestic Assault, Child Abuse (a class E felony), Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, and Vandalism.

Later on the same date, police spoke to Morrison. Morrison advised that Layne and she were arguing about money that had been loaned to him, and he got angry over the conversation. At that time, he threw the shovel into her rear passenger window, where it was confirmed that the child was sitting. Morrison then identified the female party in the truck as a Whitney Harris party, correlating with the witness stating she believed he was with a female named Whitney. Police positively identified Harris. Harris had a purse in her seat of the S10, where police located .3 grams of suspected methamphetamine, as well as two canisters of Nitrous Oxide, also known as “whip its”. Harris fled the traffic stop conducted by police. Warrants are being sought for Possession of Schedule II, Possession of Unlawful Inhalants or Gases, and Evading Arrest.
