Crews are continuing to battle a nearly 500-acre wildfire that broke out in Sequatchie County early Sunday afternoon. Rough terrain and weather conditions posed challenges for crews working to contain the fire.
Fire Chief Norman Hatfield with the Dunlap Fire Department says the fire was likely started by someone burning leaves at the base of the mountain on Woodcock Road.
Three tanker planes flew in from Florida, dropping red dye to help smother the flames. Rain late Sunday into early Monday helped first responders from over a dozen departments with firefighting efforts
Residents say this is the largest wildfire they’ve seen in the area for a few years. According to reports, the fire on Woodcock Road burned 450 acres and is now contained.
