Former 12th Judicial District Drug Task Force Director Pleads Guilty to Charges

Cody Smith

Cody Smith, the former director of 12th Judicial District Drug Task Force, pleaded guilty to two charges of possession of meth with intent to sell in Marion County.

Investigators found that Smith misappropriated $7,246 from confidential and seized funds between 2017 and 2021. He obtained money for drug purchases without evidence, took cash from a drug investigation subject, and transferred informant funds from another agent.

The report revealed a document bearing a forged officer’s signature omitting the seizure of $3,771. Additionally, $4,225 in confidential expenditures lacked supporting documentation.

The director was fired on May 31, 2021.

Last week, Smith pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, according to paperwork we obtained from the Marion County court clerk’s office. He received two 10-year sentences, which will be probated after 11 months and 29 days.

The 12th Judicial District Drug Task Force serves Bledsoe, Rhea, Sequatchie, Grundy, Franklin, and Marion counties, and during the investigation period, it also served Van Buren and Warren counties.
