Look before You Lock; Save a Child’s Life

As summer temperatures soar to the 90s and 100s, Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett wants to remind Tennesseans of the free “Baby in the Back” car hangtag program.

On days with extreme heat, temperatures inside a parked car can quickly reach 140 degrees.

“The Baby in the Back program can make all the difference in protecting our youngest citizens from extreme temperatures,” said Secretary Hargett.

The free tag hangs from the rearview mirror and is designed to serve as a visual reminder to drivers who might have children riding in the back.

The hangtags can be requested online or by calling 615-253-2668.

Thirteen children have died from the heat inside vehicles in the United States so far this year. These deaths are horrible tragedies, leaving behind enormous grief compounded with feelings of guilt.

Using the Baby in the Back hangtag program will hopefully help remind parents or caregivers to check the back seat one final time to ensure their child is safe during significant weather events.
