A hiker died after experiencing a snake bite at Savage Gulf State Park in Grundy County last week.
Emergency responders arrived at the Savage Gulf trailhead off 55th Avenue in Gruetli-Laager on Friday around 12:30 p.m. Grundy County Emergency Management reported that the individual was found about half a mile down the trail. Medical staff performed CPR manually and with a compression device before transporting the individual to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.
Grundy County Emergency Management recommends carrying first aid supplies during outdoor activities and being aware of wildlife and possible risks.
Savage Gulf, managed by Tennessee State Parks as part of South Cumberland State Park, covers nearly 16,000 acres in Grundy and Sequatchie counties and offers features such as waterfalls, wildflowers, sandstone cliffs, and gorges, along with opportunities for hiking, swimming, rock climbing, and camping.
