Crews with TDOT recently removed compromised rock along I-24 West near mile marker 137 (near Monteagle) after a rockfall occurred in that area on November 4, 2025.

In the “after” photo, you’ll see a much more distinct overhang in the rock where the unstable rock was hammered away below it.
A bulldozer then shaped the removed rock into a berm, creating a space to contain any future falling rock.
The right lane of I-24 West near MM 137 will remain closed while TDOT engineers design a permanent repair solution.
TDOT regularly monitors slope conditions, and over the past 5 years have completed rockfall mitigation at 6 sites along I-24 in Marion County.
TDOT is currently developing one for I-24 Eastbound in Grundy County.
