In addition to local county and city road crews preparing for and treating roadways ahead of this weekend’s potential winter weather, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is preparing roads for potential snow and ice by pre-treating surfaces with salt brine.
TDOT’s Region 1, which covers the majority of East Tennessee, receives salt shipments year-round to stay ready for winter weather. Before, during and after the snowfall, TDOT crews will apply salt to help keep roads safe.
TDOT crewes were seen Thursday afternoon in Marion County treating US Highway 41 between Jasper and Haletown with brine, in addition to other roads under their jurisdiction.
The department is preparing to help East Tennessee navigate winter weather conditions that could include snow-filled roads or black ice.
TDOT officials say the possibility of black ice on the roadways increases when those temperatures drop below freezing and say staying home this weekend might be the best option for families as roads could be either snow-filled or have black ice, and people staying home allows more room for TDOT crews to clean up snow and treat roadways.
