The Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center is preparing for a major outdoor expansion project aimed at increasing education and community engagement surrounding one of Alabama’s most significant civil rights stories.
The expansion will include a memorial garden, a historic railcar exhibit, an outdoor classroom, and a new welcome center.
Museum leaders say the project is designed to encourage conversation and provide visitors with a deeper understanding of fairness, justice, and human dignity through the story of the Scottsboro Boys case.
The Scottsboro Boys case began in 1931 when nine young Black men were falsely accused of raping two white women aboard a freight train traveling through Alabama. The trials and convictions drew national attention and became a landmark moment in American civil rights history.
The museum, located in Scottsboro, serves as both a historical site and educational center focused on preserving the legacy of the case and its impact on the justice system and civil rights movement.
Officials say the new additions are intended to create more interactive learning opportunities for visitors while honoring the legacy of the Scottsboro Boys and the broader fight for equal justice.
