Marion County Sheriff’s Department Warns Residents About Phone Scam

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a phone scam involving a caller falsely claiming to be “Lt. Prince” with the department.

According to the sheriff’s department, several reports have been received from individuals who were contacted by the scammer and told they needed to pay fines over the phone.

Officials emphasized that while the department does have a Lieutenant Prince, neither he nor any other member of the sheriff’s office will ever request payment for fines by phone.

Authorities also stressed that legitimate warrants or financial matters are not handled through phone calls demanding immediate payment.

The sheriff’s department is encouraging residents to remain cautious and avoid providing personal or financial information to unknown callers. Officials are also urging community members to speak with elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors, who are often targeted in scams of this nature.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement is advised to hang up and contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Department directly to verify the information.
