In just its second year of existence, the Northeast Alabama Community College softball program has reach
ed the pinnacle of junior college softball.
The Mustangs rallied from an early deficit Sunday to defeat Temple College 7-3 and claim the 2026 NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. The title marks the first national championship in program history and caps off one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent memory.
Northeast Alabama found itself trailing 3-0 after the opening inning of the championship game, but the Mustangs responded with a six-run explosion in the third inning and never looked back. The victory completed a perfect run through the national tournament, where Northeast Alabama outscored its opponents 34-14 over five games.
The national title comes just one season after the program’s inaugural campaign, when the Mustangs finished with a 17-26-1 record. This year, Northeast Alabama transformed into one of the nation’s most dominant teams, ending the season with an impressive 56-4 record.
Head Coach Joe Guthrie said he believed from the beginning of the season that the team had championship potential. That confidence proved well-founded as the Mustangs not only captured the Alabama Community College Conference championship but also finished the year on an eight-game winning streak that culminated with a national title.
The championship run was fueled by a close-knit roster that players described as family. Sophomore leaders who helped lay the foundation during the program’s first season played a key role in guiding Northeast Alabama to the sport’s biggest stage in only year two.
With the victory, the Mustangs become one of the fastest programs in junior college softball history to capture a national championship, completing a remarkable rise from startup program to national champion in just two seasons.
