The TSSAA has a Heat Index rule that sports teams must abide by. Once the heat index reaches 95 to 99 degrees, practices are limited to two hours, with athletes getting at least four separate rest breaks each hour.
For football, contact is still allowed in that range, but helmets and shoulder pads have to come off during activities that don’t involve contact.
At a heat index of 100 to 104 degrees, practices are limited to one hour, including 20 minutes of required rest breaks. Conditioning isn’t allowed, and football players can’t wear protective equipment during non-contact practice.
And above a heat index of 104 degrees, outdoor practice stops altogether.
TSSAA’s policy also puts restrictions on games in that level of heat. Interscholastic competitions must be postponed unless an appropriate health care professional is present with access to a cold-water immersion tub or another rapid cooling method. Under no circumstances can an outdoor practice take place in those conditions.
TSSAA also requires cold-water immersion or another form of rapid on-site cooling to be available during all warm-weather practices. If exertional heat stroke is suspected, the policy calls for cooling the athlete through immersion before transporting them to a hospital.
