On August 30, 2026, Grundy County Jail employees reported an active riot in A-Pod, the facility’s maximum security housing unit.
At the time of the incident, seventeen inmates were housed in A pod. Three employees were present during this time. Due to the seriousness of the situation and concerns for employee safety, multiple law enforcement agencies were asked to provide mutual aid to assist in bringing the situation under control.
A response team was organized, and officers subsequently made entry into the housing unit. Upon entry, officers discovered that inmates had placed sharp, broken mop handles near the entrance of the pod, creating a dangerous obstacle capable of causing serious injury upon entering the area. Once inside, the officers were able to gain control of the situation without injury.
After further accessing the damage, the riot caused extensive damage to the facility. The current estimated loss is approximately $15,000 to $20,000. The damages include; inmate telephones, security cameras, fire alarm systems, entry-door windows, skylights, and the facility’s sprinkler system. The damaged sprinkler system also resulted in significant flooding within the housing unit.
Repairs are currently underway and are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office understands the importance of jail ministries, volunteers, and outside program providers in providing positive and rehabilitative opportunities to inmates. We respectfully ask everyone involved to remain patient while repairs are completed.
The inmates who were identified and participated in the riot have been charged with the following:
- Aggravated rioting
- Vandalism over $10,000
- Attempted aggravated assault on law enforcement
Two additional inmates will face charges related to attempted escape.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate destruction of county property, attempts to escape custody, or actions that place correctional officers or other inmates in danger.
