New Tennessee Law Allows Emergency Air Transport for Injured K-9s

A new Tennessee law will now allow emergency medical helicopters to transport injured police and service dogs under certain conditions.

The legislation permits Life Force air medical helicopters and other emergency medical aircraft to carry injured K-9 officers and working dogs during emergency situations when space and safety conditions allow.

Supporters of the measure say the law recognizes the important role police dogs and service animals play in law enforcement and emergency response operations throughout the state. K-9 units are frequently used in search operations, narcotics investigations, suspect tracking, and rescue missions.

Previously, air medical transport for injured working dogs faced legal and policy limitations. Advocates argued that delays in emergency veterinary treatment could place the animals’ lives at risk after serious injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Officials say the law is expected to improve response capabilities and potentially save the lives of injured K-9 officers across Tennessee.
