A young student at Nelson Primary School is being recognized for quick thinking that helped keep classmates and staff safe during a potential emergency.
The Scottsboro Fire Department presented Dash Duncan with a Fire Safety Hero Award during the Scottsboro City Council meeting Tuesday night after officials say he noticed smoke coming from a bathroom inside the school and immediately alerted his teachers.
According to fire officials, the smoke was traced to a light fixture in the restroom that had malfunctioned. School staff quickly evacuated the building and safely handled the situation without injuries.
Firefighters praised Dash for speaking up right away, saying his actions allowed school officials to respond quickly and safely before the situation could worsen.
The department said Dash’s actions are a reminder that even small actions can make a big difference.
Dash’s mother also shared some of his heartfelt reactions following the recognition.
“Wow, I can’t believe I’m famous!” Dash said.
“Mom, did you know I’m a hero?”
He also added, “God, thank you for letting me save my classmates.”
