Man Sentenced to 80 Years in Prison for Shooting Scottsboro Police Lieutenant

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — A man accused of shooting a Scottsboro police lieutenant during a domestic violence response in 2025 has been sentenced to 80 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

Daniel McCarn entered his guilty plea Friday, Oct. 23, bringing a resolution to a case that left Scottsboro Police Lt. Derek Porch seriously injured and prompted a nearly 24-hour manhunt.

The shooting happened in July 2025 when Scottsboro officers responded to a domestic violence call. Authorities said McCarn opened fire while fleeing the scene, striking Porch in the hand.

McCarn escaped following the shooting, leading to an extensive search involving law enforcement. Officers located and arrested him near railroad tracks approximately 23 hours later.

Porch survived the shooting and eventually returned home to a hero’s welcome. However, his recovery remains ongoing.

According to Scottsboro police, Porch continues to undergo physical therapy and may require additional medical procedures. His injuries could affect him for years.

Porch and his family attended Friday’s court hearing but did not make public statements afterward.

Scottsboro Police Chief Greg Godfrey told WAFF 48 that the case has been difficult for the department. He expressed gratitude that Porch survived and said the sentencing allows the department to begin moving forward.

Scottsboro Police Lt. Coty Durham, the department’s public information officer, described the outcome as bittersweet, noting that McCarn’s guilty plea represents an acknowledgment of responsibility for the shooting.

While the 80-year prison sentence brings the criminal case to a close, Porch continues to face the physical challenges resulting from his injuries.
